Chattanooga, TN. (May 12th, 2022) - The Red Wolves are pleased to announce three new additions to the Youth Academy coaching staff: Gavin McKinney, Katie Phillips, and Fabio Hernandez.
Gavin McKinney, a Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada native is the current University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Head Women’s Soccer Coach, where he won Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2021. McKinney was the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Cumberland University from 2009-2014, where he won Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013. He has also coached in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as well, where he was ODP Region III Staff from 2015-2017 and Tennessee ODP Staff from 2009-2017. McKinney joins the Academy staff with a wealth of experience and recognition at the managing level, where he has seen great success at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga since 2015. McKinney joins the Red Wolves Academy coaching staff as the 2013 Girls Head Coach.
Academy Sporting Director Luke Winter heaped praise on McKinney saying, “Adding Gavin to the staff only increases the quality and depth of coaches we have at the club. The opportunity for young players to learn from him is invaluable and I believe this type of hire will help raise the quality of Chattanooga soccer for years to come. Coaching is about continuing to learn and grow and that is the same for our academy, Gavin will help this process immensely with his knowledge and skills”
The second addition to the Academy Staff, Katie Phillips, a native of London, England, comes to the Red Wolves with a rich footballing history having played for Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in England over a span of seven years. She was a part of the Lady Red Wolves side who won their conference last season, and coached at Tennessee Wesleyan University as a Student Assistant Coach in 2021. Phillips joins the Red Wolves Academy coaching staff as the 2014 Girls Red & 2012 Girls Head Coach & Special Program Director.
The third new piece to the Academy Staff is Fabio Hernandez, who comes to the Red Wolves with a Barcelona Innovation Hub Master Tactical Analysis License and a USSF ‘D’ coaching license. Hernandez has deep experience in goalkeeper training and analysis as well as tactical knowledge and analysis. Hernandez joins the Red Wolves Academy coaching staff as the 2013 Girls Red Coach & Director of Goalkeeping.
Sporting Director Luke Winter spoke about the importance of the additions of Katie Phillips and Fabio Hernandez saying, “Fabio joined the organization this Spring and has made an instant impact with the 2013 girls. His ability to adapt and teach professionals all the way down to the Jr Academy is impressive and speaks volumes for his talent as a coach. Fabio has improved our GK Academy and we now offer 3 nights of GK Training which helps build the club and quality of players in that specific position.”
“Katie has had an impressive career as a player with multiple years inside Premier League academies with clubs such as Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur. Katie then took her talents to Tennessee Wesleyan University where she had a stellar career and graduated with a teaching degree which will only help her approach to coaching.”
